The Female Lens:Women and WarAcross the world, and in every country affected by conflict, women play a critical role in helping their communities recover and rebuild following the devastation wrought by war.Humanitarian mine action, including the removal and clearance of explosive items, and community outreach to share safety information, are essential elements of peacebuilding processes and post-conflict recovery.Ensuring women are involved in these efforts in meaningful ways makes the work more equitable, more efficient, and more effective.Highlighting the role women play in mine action efforts globally is one way to transform a sector that has long been considered “men’s work”. Women challenge these existing dynamics in many ways by advocating for non-violent, inclusive and cooperative approaches in their work. What’s more, incorporating the lived experiences of women and girls not only reflects their unique and specific needs and challenges, but means they are the ones setting priorities, creating change, and transforming communities. In 2024, the Mines Advisory Group (MAG) is highlighting the role that women play in our mission to save lives, ease suffering and enable sustainable development so people can live with dignity and choice, free from fear. This project puts women back in the driving seat of mine action: an attempt to restore the agency that women and girls are too often deprived of in conflict settings.
